I wish you the very happiest holiday season this year! Whether it is your first holiday season with your new baby, or you are celebrating with a belly bump please know that I am so thankful to have met you this year.

As 2011 comes to a close, I'm looking back at all the moms and babies that I have had the honor to work with and I am just feeling very blessed. Thank you all for keeping in touch via email and Facebook and in person. I truly enjoy watching you and your babies grow!

Recipe of the Month

Toasted Pecan and Cranberry Quinoa

*Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups dry-roasted quinoa

2 navel oranges, zested

1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans

2 1/2 cups veggie broth (or water)

1/2 cup dried cranberries

2 tablespoons flat leaf parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1. Rinse quinoa in a fine mesh strainer.

2. Combine broth, oil, and quinoa, bring to a boil.

3. Add cranberries, cover and lower heat to low and cook for 15 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes.

5. Fluff with a fork and toss in orange zest, parsley, and toasted pecans.

6. Serve warm or at room temp.

Is also great with diced roasted squash!

Help Your Child Have a Great School Year

We've all heard how important it is for kids to show up at school with a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast under their belts. But sometimes parents forget how much their own attitudes can influence children's success in, and enjoyment of, school. Some tips:

Catch your children learning, catch them problem- solving, catch them being curious.

Don't let your kids catch you complaining about their school. Let them know you approve of and value the education they will receive.

Come to one of our classes designed to help your family get the most out of their school while encouraging children's academic success at home. Info on classes...

PROGRAM OF THE MONTH:
School-Based Dental Program

Seacoast Healthy Grins dental hygienist "Miss Cindy" is gearing up to begin another year teaching more than a thousand children from pre-school to 7th grade about how to keep their teeth healthy for life. This mobile school dental program, administered through Families First, offers free oral health education and dental screenings to all children in the Portsmouth elementary schools, Newington public school and early-childhood programs at the Community Campus. To help get children excited about taking care of their teeth, we give them dental supplies, which are funded by the Rotary Club of Portsmouth and Northeast Delta Foundation.

Following the classroom presentations and screenings, Seacoast Healthy Grins offers in-school dental cleanings and dental sealants to children who do not have a dental home or who have not seen a dentist in 12 months. And we help children who have further dental needs access ongoing care at Families First Dental Center, which is open to all children and teens in NH and Maine. Can You Donate These Items to Help Our Clients?

Clients in our home-visiting programs have been asking about donations of back-to-school supplies.They need new backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, lunch boxes, glue, crayons, markers and department-store gift cards. Email us with questions.

Our Health Care for the Homeless program is looking for donations of personal hygiene products including shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, lotion and deodorant. Our patients who are homeless really appreciate having these items! Email us with questions.

Please bring either type of item to the Family Center window in the lobby at Families First in Portsmouth (directions).

KIDS' ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH: Bake Something Seasonal

Make a seasonal snack together. Go to a local farmer's market, if possible, and buy blueberries to make muffins, or zucchini to make zucchini bread. Allow time for asking questions and learning about the farm. When baking, let your child measure, add and mix the ingredients, and read the directions to the recipe if they are able. Have some friends over and enjoy a picnic together.

PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH:
Build a Bank of Shared Positive Experiences

Practice communication through sharing daily activities and feelings. Choose activities that you enjoy together. Having a lot of shared positive experiences with your child will help foster communication when difficulties do arise.

Program of the Month: Parenting Classes and Groups

If you've never been to a parenting class or parent group, coming to one for the first time might seem intimidating. To make it easier, we'll explain what you'll find when you get here.

You'll find all kinds of parents and caregivers - younger and older, living in every kind of situation, with many different views on parenting. They are single, they are married, they are blended families, they are grandparents.

They've come here for all sorts of reasons:Perhaps to solve one problem - like tantrums, sleeping through the night, or teen attitude - or perhaps seeking a whole new approach to parenting. Maybe they are looking to get to know other parents, or they need 90 minutes of adult sanity while their kids are involved in a wonderful program right next door.

During the programs, the facilitator presents ideas to discuss, activities, demonstrations, and parenting strategies to try. There is a lot of laughing and connecting through common issues. At Families First, we believe parenting goes best when you have a community of supportive people to give and take with.

So, come and try one, two or a dozen of our parenting and family groups. You'll find that everyone is welcoming and accepting and can relate to your job of raising kids.

When Our Patients Need Specialty Care

Drs. Al Lantinen and Mark Chag have been our partners in prenatal care since 1984.

Families First provides affordable, high-quality primary care regardless of ability to pay, but what happens when an uninsured or underinsured patient needs to see a specialist? Getting specialty care can be a challenge for people without insurance, but thanks to the generosity of many specialists in our community who have donated or discounted their services, our patients have options. For example:

We often refer patients to SeaCare Health Services, which has a network of volunteer health care providers who see patients in their own offices.
Two physicians donate their time once a month to see patients at Families First and consult with our staff: Dr. Barbara Deuell of Allergy Associates of New Hampshire and Dr. Joan Sisto of Northeast Dermatology Associates.
Other health care providers donate at certain times of year. On three Saturdays in March, the Gastroenterology Professional Association practice at Portsmouth Regional Hospital provided colonoscopies at no charge to uninsured Families First patients. (They found at least one patient with cancer that could have been life-threatening if not caught in time!) And in January, for the second time, several optometrists led by Dr. Amy Pruszenski of Harbor Eyecare Center volunteered to provide an eye-exam clinic for our diabetic patients.
Last but certainly not least, Harbour Women's Health has been providing OB/GYN care on-site at Families First since 1984 and recently won a well-deserved statewide award recognizing their dedication.

We thank all of these health care professionals for partnering with us to provide complete care for our patients.

CHILDREN'S ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH:Family Placemats

Make a placemat by gluing pictures of family and friends on a piece of clear construction paper. Cover the paper with contact paper, and enjoy telling stories while sharing a family meal.

PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH: Express Unconditional Love

No matter what else is going on, make sure to give your child a hug, kiss, or a smile at least once a day - for any reason, or for no reason at all. Provide unconditional love, and express it.

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH: 5-2-1-0

Families First's health care providers, nutritionist, parent educators and home visitors recommend 5-2-1-0, a set of easy-to-remember guidelines about what it takes to be healthy and fit.

Fruits and Vegetables: More matters! Eat at least 5 servings a day. Fruit juice should be 100% juice, and no more than 8 ounces per day.

Screen Time: TV-time and computer time (excluding schoolwork) should add up to no more than 2 hours per day. Keep TVs and computers out of kids' bedrooms. Children under age 2 should have NO screen time.

Activity: Participate in at least 1 hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

Sugary Drinks: Try for 0 sodas and sugar-sweetened sports and fruit drinks. Instead, drink water and 3-4 servings a day of fat-free/skim or 1% milk.

Separation anxiety is a normal, healthy phase of development - except when it's not. On June 22 at 9:30 a.m., psychologist and author Dr. Dawn Huebner will be at Families First to answer parents' questions about separation anxiety. Learn why children of various ages are afraid to let you out of their sight, and what to do when your 3-year-old, 8-year-old or 13-year-old remains glued to your side. Going to school, going on play dates, going to bed -- life is full of mini-good-byes. This Q&A session - which is free and open to the public, will teach you skills to help your children cope.
